(PLTM) - Residents who are currently jobless because of the impact of Hurricane Irma, are being advised to check the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) to find temporary work, assisting the electricity teams across the Territory.
At a community meeting in Carrot Bay yesterday, December 10, BVIEC Deputy Manager, Henry Creque said residents who are seeking temporary jobs may visit the corporation's office in Long Bush, Road Town to seek opportunities.
"If anybody wants work, they can come at 7 in the morning; we are there basically every day. We will try to fit them in as best as possible," Creque said.
He cautioned that persons may not be hired on their visit, but said those who have been persistent have found temporary jobs assisting the linesmen and other teams working to restore electricity.
Works Minister, Hon. Mark Vanterpool, who also addressed the residents, revealed that he last week gave instructions for BVIEC to offer temporary jobs to the jobless.
"I opened up the door last Thursday to the board to hire people, even if they are not technical, but just hire people to help to move the poles and lift wires," Hon. Vanterpool explained.
He said the number of temporary workers needed by BVIEC changes everyday and urged people to be persistent in their pursuit to get a job with the power teams.
First District Representative, Hon Andrew Fahie also urged his constituents to visit the BVIEC's office in order to find work. He said he is constantly questioned about the availability of jobs by many persons in his district, who are now jobless because businesses have closed for repairs or indefinitely.
Unemployment is one of the biggest fallouts from the September hurricanes. Many persons have returned to their home countries and others have found jobs in other industries because their jobs were affected by passage of hurricanes Irma and Maria.
Residents fear the unemployment numbers in the Territory will continue to rise as large companies that were affected by the hurricanes have started laying off individuals.
