(PLTM) - The BVI topped the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) at the 2017 CXC examinations, with students who gained five (5) CSEC subjects or more, inclusive of English and Mathematics. The BVI gained 95 percent.

Other countries with top positions were Dominica, gaining 91 percent; Anguilla—87 percent; followed by Antigua and Barbuda with 80 percent.

Mr. Glenroy Cumberbatch, Registrar of CXC, made the announcement yesterday, February 28 during the OECS Education Ministers' Meeting being held in Martinique.

Cumberbatch, who was at the time addressing Ministers, commended the BVI for its brave move to implement the mandatory sitting of CXC. CXC became compulsory in the BVI back in 2014.

“You will see that 95 percent of those who got five subjects or more, including English and Mathematics in BVI. Now, BVI took a bold decision sometime back to say that they are going to move from normal exams that they do, to do the CSEC examinations,” Cumberbatch said.

He continued, “At that point in time, the braveness took a chance with lots of criticisms, but in the end, what is demonstrated here is that BVI has topped the rest of the OECS in those percentage of persons who have five subjects or more, including English and Mathematics.”

Hon. Myron Walwyn, Minister of Education and Culture is attending the meeting.

Last year was the first batch of 12-Graders to sit the CXC examinations since government added a sixth year at the high school level. It was also the first time that Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) was offered at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS).

Following the announcement of the 2017 CSEC results, Hon. Walwyn had stated that after analyzing the results, the Ministry of Education realized that there is a lot of work still to be done to ensure that the results continue to improve.
