(PLTM) - Voters are being cautioned against traveling any time soon, as general election might be held next month.

Hon. Andrew Fahie, Opposition Member and Chairman of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP), has predicted February 25 as election day.

Speaking over the weekend on Jost Van Dyke (JVD), Hon. Fahie said that the National Democratic Party (NDP) government needs to rush with elections because they are afraid that questionable matters will come to light.

“We know that election is going to be early. I predict that election is going to be February 25 because they cannot let it go longer because too many things are going to come out. So, stay woke. If you are going to make travel arrangements, don’t leave February, stick around,” he said.

In November, Governor Gus Jaspert in consultation with Premier Hon. Dr. D. Orlando Smith moved election day deadline up to April 16. It was constitutionally due by August.

Immediately after the House of Assembly is dissolved, general election must be held within 21 days, but not more than two months after the dissolution. It is believed that tomorrow’s sitting may be the last before election is called.

Meanwhile, Hon. Fahie said that as they await the election day announcement, there should be debates held in each district and all At-Large members should also take part in debates.

He said that the recent debate held on Virgin Gorda (VG), which saw his candidate for the Ninth District, Mr. Vincent Wheatley victorious, is a clear example that such debates are necessary.

“And we don’t mind debating district by district, At-Large by At-Large. Now there is one leader saying let’s get the leaders together for a debate. Our system, Westminster does not operate how he wants it. This is not Burger King, he cannot get it his way,” Hon. Fahie said.

Hon. Myron Walwyn, Chairman of the NDP and At-Large Representative has called on all the persons who are seeking to become Premier to take part in a debate.

“Find out if your representative has any substance by putting them against those who they are going and run against…We are going to do the debate district by district and At-Large by At-Large and they will understand that when those district by district (debates are) done, that VIP don’t only have the best candidates but the best team,” Hon. Fahie said.

The First District Representative also disclosed that the candidates at last week’s Ninth District debate were given the questions three weeks in advance. To this end, he said that VIP sat and worked together with Mr. Wheatley to ensure he was prepared.

“All the candidates had the questions three weeks in advance and the team that prepared the best with their man prevailed. So, that alone could show you that VIP has the brain power, know-how and solutions to help the people,” he expressed.
