(PLTM) - A man was today, March 13, fined $2000 for smashing his ex-girlfriend’s car windshield with a hammer, last year.
Kelly Williams of Virgin Gorda (VG) pleaded guilty to the charge of criminal damage when he appeared before Magistrate Ayana Baptiste-DaBreo.
The Court heard that he committed the act on August 16, 2018.
Prior to the incident, the man reportedly approached the woman, who he shares a child with, in a supermarket on Virgin Gorda and began addressing her loudly, using indecent language.
Following that occurrence, the woman returned home and parked her car.
Later, when she returned to her vehicle and sat down, she felt something prick her skin. It was then that she noticed the shattered glass.
The man admitted to the court that he was in the area and damaged her vehicle, saying that he was acting out of anger because she threatened to take away his rights to see his son.
Mr. Kelly apologised for his actions in court, after which the Magistrate informed him that because he did not waste the court’s time, she deducted one-thirds of his fine, which would have initially been $3000.
She added that the charge could attract a prison sentence but given the circumstances, she exercised her powers to institute a fine instead.
