(PLTM) - Minister of Health and Social Development, Hon. Carvin Malone now has ministerial oversight of prisons as part of his portfolio, and he plans to have an assessment of the prisons done soon.

This responsibility previously fell under the former Minister of Education and Culture, Myron Walwyn.

Responsibility for the prisons is jointly held by Governor Augustus Jaspert and Hon. Malone.

Speaking with BVI Platinum News, Hon. Malone divulged that an assessment of the prisons, their condition and what is needed for their development will need to be conducted.

“We still have to do an assessment and we have to do it jointly with the Governor as we share that portfolio,” he stated.

This, he further disclosed, will be followed by a plan of action.

“We still have to get together because as you are aware, it is a joint responsibility between the Governor and myself, so after this week, we intend to get together to have a coordinated plan of action completed,” he stated.

The last publicly documented visit to Her Majesty’s Prisons at Balsam Ghut by the Governor was on October 29 last year, when he had a look at the progress of repairs at the prison, which was badly damaged by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.

The Prison Act of 2018, which was passed late last year, has placed heavy emphasis on the rehabilitation of inmates and the heightened emphasis on training of officers.
