Six exciting games in the Mix Touch league highlighted the start of the 2012/2013 BVI Rugby Football Union (BVIRFU) League at the Cappoon´s Bay field last evening, September 26.
In the first game, Roadtown Wholesale (RTW) battered Baker Tilley, 13 - 1 while in the second game, Grant Thornton dropped Digicel, 8-2. Krys Global proved too much for Maples and that game ended 11-0.
Digicel was bounced by RTW, 7-6 while Maples sneaked past Baker Tilley, 3-2. The final game of the evening saw Grant Thornton lose 6-2 to Krys Global. Ogier did not play last evening. Each week, one team will sit out.
BVIRFU Development Officer, Sherlock 'Solo' Solomon told Platinum News that the league will run for the next six weeks with game being played every Wednesday.
"We are off to an exciting start with lots of expectations to come for the season. Already we have seen that this mix touch league has attracted some new players, especially youth players. We have set up the scoring that each team is encouraged to play female and youth players. If a female or youth player scores the point value is doubled. The system is very encouraging," Solomon stated.
He expressed his satisfaction with the way RTW played youth player, Adrian Singh and Grant Thornton for including his brother, Daniel Singh into their team. Solomon said that both players scored a few times for their respective teams during last evening´s competition.
As it relates to the remainder of the season, Solomon noted that the BVIRFU is looking forward to a one-day inter-island 7-a-side competition which will be played at the A. O Shirley Grounds that will set three teams from BVI against teams from Puerto Rico, St. Maarten and the recently formed St. Thomas club.
Additionally, Solomon revealed that the BVI has been invited to participate in the North America Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) Under 19's tournament which is slated for July, 2013 in Trinidad and Tobago.
He said that practice sessions will be held from 9:00 am every Saturday at the A. O Shirley Ground. Solomon said that a team will be selected based on practice session and is expected to compete in the inter-island competition.
Solomon also spoke about preparations for the 2013 NACRA senior men´s 15s tournament slated for the first quarter of next year.
"During this season will have a lot more rugby being played with more players being ready to compete on a regional level. With training and more game play the BVI will get better," Solomon stated.
