Queen's Birthday Celebrated With Parade; Service Men & Women Honoured

Residents turned out in numbers on Saturday, June 11 to take part in the Territory's birthday celebration for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II which was observed with a grand parade at the Festival Grounds in Road Town. At the annual event, police officers, prison officers and fire officers were honoured.

During the event, Governor Boyd McCleary inspected all units of the parade, following which there was the march pass, the hoisting of the Governor's Standard and the Royal Salute given in honour of Her Majesty.

Saturday's event was the first observance of the Queen's birthday for His Excellency Governor McCleary.

The parade which was under the command of Acting Chief Inspector of Police, Mr. Marlon Charles, included participants of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, Virgin Islands Cadet Corps, Fire and Rescue Services, Her Majesty's Prison, BVI Red Cross, Boy Scouts, Girls Brigade, Althea Scatliffe Primary School, Lions Club, Francis Lettsome Primary School and service clubs, among many others.

Honoured Officers

Following Governor McCleary's reading of the greetings sent to the Her Majesty the Queen, several officers of the Police Force, HMP and Fire and Rescue Services Department received medals in honour of their years of service.

Seventeen police officers received the Colonial Police Long Service Medal for 18 years of service, nine officers received the First Clasp to the Police Long Service Medal for 25 years of service and five received the Second Clasp to the Police Long Service Medal for 30 years of service.

Four officers from Her Majesty's Prison received the Prison Long Service Medal for 18 years of service and one received the First Clasp to the Prison Long Service Medal for 25 years of service. Six officers of the Fire and Rescue Services Department received the Colonial Fire and Rescue Long Service Medal for 18 years of service.

Police officers who received medals were Errol George, Claude Rymer, Bill Johnney, Job Trumpet, Selwyn Rock, Lorna Creque, George James, Steve George, Sylvia Glasgow, O'Carol Williams-Ollivierre, Elvis Harrigan, John Rhymer, Claude Farrington, Rudolph David, Simon Gillbert, Amarro Potter, Cyril Thomas, C.Alexis Charles, Ariel Cameron, Duncan Williams, Calvin James, J. Dennis Jones, Joel Gumbs, Lionel Lindo, Westmore Jeffers, Kenneth Arthur, Richard Holder, David Vanterpool, Anderson Williams Blackman, Patrick Harewood and Teddy Creque.

Prison officers who received medals were Michael Hypolite, Leoneal Jack, Muriel Fraser, Seymour Phillip and Alexander Mills. The fire officers were Leando Stoutt, Joseph George, William Penn, Tyronne Caddle, Victor Williams and Melvin Jeffers.

Music was provided by the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Jazz Band and the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force Band.

The Governor's Standard is the official flag of His Excellency and is flown at the Governor's Office and residence. The Governor salutes the flag in the Royal Salute, symbolising Her Majesty's presence.

It was enjoyable. The bands were excellent. The students do a great job of being attentive. Congratulations to all participants and medal honorees.

I turned up to the parade excited as it has been great in the past, yet when i arrived i was not allowed to sit down as the seats were reserved and was told to move. There was seating provided for people without a reservation however this was very limited. I had to stand out in the hot sun with... more

I have to agree with "disappointed". They could have at least allerted the public to walk with their own seats.

I was also there and I think the seating arrangements are very poor. Those plastic chairs in the heat were not even so great either. A suggestion: I think they need to relocate the parade back on the field.
