The BVI Olympic Committee Executive will be celebrating Olympic Day on June 23, 2012 with a symbolic run and a morning of activities at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.

The two-mile run or walk with a one-mile option, celebrates Olympism and starts at 7.00am. Registration is at 6.30am.

The run will be followed by a series of events that includes displays by National sports Federations, health and wellness screening, and a discussion panel on sport and its impact on the community.

The HLSCC will also host a tour of the VI Maritime Museum and the Roger Downing Mangrove Boardwalk. The Olympic Day programme, which ends at noon, will culminate in a Cultural party with performances by the Lashing Dogs, The BVI Heritage Dancers, and The Elite Sky Dancers.

"The BVIOC wants the whole community to get involved with the message of Olympism," said Ephraim Penn, President of the BVIOC.

"The HLSCC has partnered with us to demonstrate that the contribution of sport has an impact on shaping our community. Olympic Day is an occasion to highlight the philosophy of Olympism which goes beyond sports for sports sake. It requires us to be responsible citizens and to work towards unity through respect for what has been entrusted to us, striving for excellence in all that we do, and to foster local and global friendships. The spirit of Olympism is influenced by education, health, and local community development and our traditions and cultures. We invite everyone to join us and celebrate the message."

National Federations will host mini-games on the grounds of the HLSCC during the course of the morning and breakfast and refreshments will be on sale.

Visitors to the HLSCC´s Maritime Museum will learn of the rich maritime history of the Virgin Islands, including wooden boatbuilding and how to preserve the knowledge of this tradition. The Roger Downing Mangrove Boardwalk takes walkers through the mangroves to see the eco-structure and the marine life that thrives within.

The extended programme of events is part of the BVIOC´s Time for London 2012 campaign which is supported by presenting sponsor LIME, and Harneys, the BVI London Office, Friends of the BVI, and Thornton Smith.
