Readers of one of the world's leading travel magazines have once again voted Virgin Gorda, home of the magnificent Baths and other top-rated sites, among the top 5 destinations in the Caribbean, Bermuda and the Bahamas region.
The results of the Travel + Leisure 2012 World's Best Awards readers' survey placed Virgin Gorda at #3 behind Vieques in Puerto Rico (1) and Harbour Island in the Bahamas (2). Last year's survey placed Virgin Gorda at fourth place.
Rounding out the top 5 are the Grenadines in the Southern Caribbean (4) and St. John, United States Virgin Islands (5).
The BVI Tourist Board stated that Virgin Gorda entices travelers with its yacht clubs, quiet coves, safe anchorages and luxury resorts and villas. On the North Sound and accessible only by water, the exclusive Bitter End Yacht Club offers a premier resort and barefoot elegance.
Natural beauty is in abundance on the third largest of the Virgin Islands, which measures eight and a half square miles.
"Discover the indigenous plant-lined trails, nature sanctuaries and natural wonders of our protected national parks: Gorda Peak, Devil's Bay, Spring Bay, The North Sound, Little Fort National Park nature sanctuary, The Baths, a popular attraction where huge granite boulders create mysterious grottos, saltwater pools and a connecting trail that entices visitors to swim and snorkel," the Tourist Board stated.
The survey also mentions Biras Creek among its top resorts in the region. Travel + Leisure describes Biras as a secluded and hilly 140-acre peninsula, which feels like its own world.
"Guests arrive by boat or helicopter and are whisked off in a golf cart to one of the cottage suites-each of which has an outdoor shower and a pair of bicycles parked at the entryway. A short stroll past a salt-pond bird sanctuary is Deep Bay, where you'll find a trove of catamarans, kayaks, and Boston Whalers for guests to use. To truly escape, untie one and zip along the scrubby coastline until you spy the perfect cove to call your own for the day," Travel + Leisure mentioned.
Another resort listed among the top resorts in the region is Rosewood Little Dix Bay on Virgin Gorda.
Every year, Travel + Leisure asks its readers which industry suppliers represent the very best in travel. The results of the 17th annual Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards survey, revealing readers' favorite hotels, cities, islands, cruise lines, airlines, car-rental agencies, safari outfitters and tour operators are listed on www.TravelandLeisure.com.
