The need for constant maintenance of the Noel Lloyd Action Movement Park has come to the forefront once again and Premier and Tourism Minister, Hon. Dr. Orlando Smith has assured that plans are in the making to improve the park.

The issue was raised last evening, August 20 during the National Democratic Party's (NDP) radio programme where residents complained about the damaged benches in the park and the need for someone to oversee the use of the bathroom facilities.

Premier Smith disclosed, "Actually, we are looking at reinvigorating the park to make it continue to be attractive to both visitors and residents. We have some great ideas for entertainment for there and in other areas in Road Town during the season."

The Premier stated that they must continue to ensure structures are maintained, but noted that they have done a fairly good job with maintaining the park over the years.

"...Be more vigilant in maintaining our physical and other structures in the BVI. I think we have done a fairly good job with the park...We have to look at the benches, plants...To make it continue to look attractive," the Premier stated.

One resident suggested that they erect concrete benches rather than wooden ones, since persons have displayed no pride.

At Large Representative, Hon. Archibald Christian stated that it's good that Government is working to upgrade the park. However, he noted, "People would appreciate that there is certain amount of wear and tear that is associated with a place that is publicly used every day. So from time to time you will have to replace the benches, or sometimes you even have to resort the grass to bring it back up and you may have to close it for a week or two because of what you are doing."

I am also concerned about persons sleeping in the park. I heard of a homeless man charging the tourist to use the bathroom facilities. This person would live in the park and when there is a function in the park he would beg for food to eat. At one occasion, the police was called to remove him... more

That man cleans the park every morning and every afternoon nasty people throw garbage, containers and food all over the park. People just nasty and when individuals use the park over the weekend they leave their garbage, it's ridiculous. No wonder we can't get rid of rodents on the island.

As I said in an earlier post, that's the problem!! Everybody has the mindset that "My little nastiness isn't a problem, that's why Government pay people to clean!" Have you seen people with little kids opening juice, candy etc. and just drop the wrapper anywhere?... more

@Jinx - it IS the government's fault if they won't enforce the laws against all these things that you spoke about. Almost everything you listed has a law covering it - from the litter (Litter Abatement Act) to the boat painting (Environmental Health Act) but when have you ever herd of... more

Something needs to be done about the bathroom and urgently. A few weeks ago I absolutely needed to go inside and it was positively disgusting. People in the BVI just to nasty, heartless, ignorant and ungrateful. Go to any other developing Territory and see if you see such rubbish and nastinessdisplayed in their capital. We have no shame, NONE! And don't blame expats, everybody have a part to play.

STOP feeding da "bum" and feed da chickens and see which one will stay. Those chickens help keep the Park clean and are an attraction to visitors. They, in the long run will provide EGGS and other chickens. What use is the "Bum".
