The eight winners of the Sable Trust Junior Tennis Tournament held at the end of June at the Tortola Sports Club received their valuable reward of free lessons with Davis Cup Team Coach, George Lewis.

According to the BVI Lawn Tennis Association (BILTA), coaching sessions were tailored for all the age-groups in the BVI Junior winning categories.

The children experienced play time with coach Lewis, and learnt tactics for better match performance as well as tips on stroke technique and drills which can ultimately improve overall results for both competitive and leisurely play.

According to the BVILTA, the important message of the day was "play with purpose".

Lewis, who coaches the St. Thomas Davis Cup team, is a registered U.S. Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) coach. He spent a day´s session with the junior players on the tennis court at Frenchmans Cay, West End last Saturday, September 15.

Tournament sponsor, Peter Poole of Sable Trust BVI LTd planned to reward the winning children with court and coaching sessions rather than trophies.

Lewis has taught tennis for over 20 years and has been spent coaching youngsters for the USTA Challenger series in St. Thomas. He has seen some of his juniors reach the top 120 in world rankings.

Dion Anselm, president of the BVI LTA said that the aim is to have in place a BVI coach and tennis facility at little or no cost to youngsters who could not otherwise afford it.

We can then foster and teach these and more children to play even better tennis and go forward to represent the BVI. Until that day comes, we are indebted to our Sponsors such as Sable Trust BVI Ltd for providing opportunities such as this," Anselm stated.

According to the BVILTA, the Training day was deemed a success as the children put some of their newly learnt tactics and abilities into play with one another.

The Association stated that Coach Lewis was very impressed with the participating kids and commented on how impressed he was with the current level of talent. He would welcome the opportunity to work with them once again.
