Two of the best in the Caribbean, Cliff Williams and Sgevon Reefe will go head-to-head as weightlifters compete for places on the national team which will compete at international competitions over the next four months.
President of the BVI Powerlifting, Weightlifting & Fitness Federation, Steve George told BVI Platinum News that weightlifters across the Territory will compete at Bash on the Beach slated for Monday, October 22 at Long Bay Beach, Beef Island.
"We expect champions to be made at this event, records set and the history books re-written. Residents should come out to see Cliff Williams and Shevon Reefe, two of the Caribbean's best and the BVI's best powerlifters go head-to-head on the same stage in an epic battle for supremacy," George stated.
He said the starting time for the event is 1:30 pm.
According to George, top performers will be selected on the team to represent the BVI in Denver, Colorado on November 15 and 16, 2012 in the World Benchpress Championship and in February 2013 to represent the BVI in Guyana at another powerlifting event.
The BVI has seen improved performances over the years with their most recent success at the 10th IPL/NAPF North American Regional Powerlifting Championship which took place in the Cayman Islands where lifters secured seven medals including three gold medals.
The BVI placed 6th overall with Reefe securing two gold medals in the 120K Classic category and in the process established a new BVI Classic Squat record of 237.5k (523.5 lbs). Other medal winners included Mark Kendall, who won a gold and a silver in the 83 kilo Classic category; Don Hadaway who won 1 silver and 2 bronze in the 105K Classic category; and Cliff Williams who won a silver competing in the 120 Plus Kilo Classic category.
