Tarika Moses has stirred things up as she took the line over Lakeisha `Mimi´ Warner in race 3 of the 17th H. Lavity Stoutt Community College/Highland Spring Race Series on Tortola last Saturday, October 13.
Warner will need to secure the win in race four or the series will see its first tie overall in women category.
The race saw stiff competition from some of the Territory´s leading distance runners, but Khiry Creque cleared the line first again in the Open Male category, clocking a time of 11 minutes 16.53 seconds to secure his third victory in the Tortola leg of the Race Series.
In the Wheelchair Division Joel Jean-Baptiste continues to improve each race and is expected to continue to do so. In the one mile division, the battle for the title remains between Ariyah Smith and Vallesha Guishard, while things are wide open for the under nine boys after this weekend´s surprise win by Javin Wattley.
It was a strong push by Team Rotary of Road Town in race three, but Team Rotary of Tortola was able to edge them out for the win stretching their overall lead and leaving Teams Rotary of Road Town and Rotaract tied for second as they head into the final competitive race. Team Cedar Parents/Teachers are clearly leading the Community Partners division while Cedar School secondary has secured the title with their third victory in the secondary school category.
Coming out of a three way tie with Althea Scatliffe and Willard Wheatley, Cedar School (Team 1) are now the favourites for this division with only one point separating them and Althea Scatliffe Primary (Team 1). For all divisions, the best three races will determine the overall winners in the final competitive Tortola race, scheduled for November 10th 2012.
The Virgin Gorda series will conclude in two weeks on Saturday 27th October, 2012 with the annual awards ceremony. Registration will begin at 6:30 a.m. at the College´s Virgin Gorda Centre and races start at 7 a.m.
Race Director Stephanie Russ Penn expressed that while the competitive races are coming to an end all participants need to place on their calendars the annual Race for a Cause slated for the 24th November.
This year´s race for a cause will benefit the HLSCC´s endowment fund.
According to the President of HLSCC Dr. Karl Dawson, "Events such as these, however beneficial, cannot be successfully undertaken in the absence of community involvement and partnership. I therefore take this opportunity to extend a personal invitation to all public and private schools; government ministries and departments; service clubs; athletics and other associations; churches and church related organizations to support this fund raising drive."
For more information about series and the Race for a Cause, including how to make a financial or other contribution, please call Race Director Stephanie Russ Penn, tel. 852-7216.
