A project is being undertaken to ensure that the Beef Island road that leads to the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport is kept clean. The cleanup and beautification project is being done by Hon. Dr. Kedrick Pickering, Seventh District Representative and Hon. Marlon Penn, Eighth District Representative.

Hon. Penn stated that the focus is on the Beef Island and Trellis Bay areas.

"We are just pulling up the bushes from along the sidewalk. As you know, a lot people exercise there in the mornings and evenings so we are trying to make the place a little safer and also for tourists. And so when the walkers do walk, they don't have to walk on the street; they can walk on the side now. And the place is well kept...," he stated.

The District Representative said the cleanup and beautification project is important for both residents and tourists. He said that it is the first and last place that visitors see when they come to the island.

"It is very important, not just for the tourists, but for us as a community for the place to be kept clean...When visitors come, it is the first and last place that they see and it's to and from the airport. So we are trying our best to keep the area clean and well maintained as possible," Hon. Penn said.

He related to BVI Platinum News that the cleanup will not only focus on those two areas, as they have plans for other areas in the district. He noted that maintenance will be a priority.

"This is ongoing. We have hired two individuals from the community to ensure that the area is maintained regularly...And it's our vision to extend that down into the other areas of the district. We have one person that is responsible for the Chapel Hill to Greenland area, so we want to extend to other side streets and some of the more main streets in the district."

This is a good start! Now remove the dry brush from the roadsides so walkers can walk without incident and add a few street lights (one on every other pole will do) so people can see.

I saw it yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. It looks really nice. I hope this isn't just for the FCO guy that came in today and that it will be done on a regular basis.

If you can drive that message home to Hon. Kedrick Pickering maybe he will get it fixed since that is his district. I have tried telling him so you try now and see if you get somewhere with it.

"See", I don't think that flowers will ever do the trick.. Many areas in this country at one time had flowers planted and today those flowers are no more.

If they were not stolen, they died out due to lack of maintainance.

So I believe that the "guinea grass" look should be the only... more
