Paul Hewlett addressing the anti-doping meeting at Maria's By The Sea last Friday, January 25, 2013.
Sports personality, Paul Hewlett has been appointed Assistant Director of Sports in the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports.
While no official announcement has been made, Hewlett recently addressed an anti-doping forum last Friday, January 25 as a representative of the Ministry of Sports.
Hewlett, who is known as 'Paul On The Ball', was recently voted as Public Relations Officer for the BVI Horse Owners' Association. He also serves as Public Relations Officer of the BVI Athletics Association and is a co-host of the 'Sports Desk' television programme.
When contacted about the appointment, Hewlett stated that he could not comment since he has not been given approval to do so.
Hewlett's Facebook page indicates that he excelled at track and field, basketball, handball and volleyball. His page also indicates that he is a former BVI national football player and former President of the BVI Cricket Board.
Hewlett graduated in 1980 from the then BVI High School after returning from Antigua where he attended secondary school at the Joseph's Academy. He also attended the Bletchley College in the United Kingdom.
"It was while in England that Paul had the opportunity to train with some of Britain's top athletes like Daley Thompson and Linford Christie. Training and competing throughout the United Kingdom with the Enfield Harriers Track Team, Milton Keynes and Harringay Track Team," the Facebook page indicated.
Hewlett will serve under Patrick Harrigan, who is currently the Acting Director of the Youth Affairs and Sports Department.
There have been concerns about Harrigan's continued acting position since 2006 and calls have been made for him to be appointed as the substantive Director of the department.
During the Standing Finance Committee deliberations in December, it was revealed that a recommendation had been made to the Public Service Commission to confirm Harrigan.
