Under the guidance of coach Karl Thomas, team Antigua produced four wins on the final day of competitive sailing off Nanny Cay to lift the Premier's Cup Youth Regatta trophy on Sunday, July 14.
Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr. D. Orlando Smith presented the coveted trophy to the team that included team captain, Lewis Fitzgerald, Janeild smith, Jules Mitchell, Stephon Dundas, David Jackson and Rhone Kerby.
"Our victory can be credited to preparation. I think the team was well-prepared and we just spent a lot of time on the water training before we got to the BVI so that led to us making fewer mistakes during the races," Thomas told BVI Platinum News.
St. Croix placed second followed by Bahamas, BVI, Anguilla and Puerto Rico. Anguilla entered this year's regatta having won the previous two.
After the first day of racing, the field was split in two. In the petty class, Trinidad was first followed by Barbados, Sail Caribbean and BVI team 2.
The team pride award went to Barbados and the sportsmanship award went to Sail Caribbean team.
The regatta events started last Friday with a reception hosted by Premier Smith at Peg Leg with racing commencing the following day.
Kids And The Sea (KATS)BVI continues to host the regatta with support from the Rotary Clubs in the Virgin Islands and through sponsorships from companies like platinum sponsors, NAGICO Insurances and Digicel.
Mr. John Lewis is the Chairman of the Kids And The Sea (KATS) program which is organising the regatta which features sailors ages 10 and 18.
On Tuesday, July 9, KATS and the Regatta benefited from a $5,000 donation made by long-time partner and platinum sponsor, NAGICO Insurances. The donation was made at Nanny Cay onboard the IC-24 that bears the NAGICO Insurances logo.
There were talks that the regatta should be shared between competing islands, but most teams felt that the BVI with its good sailing conditions should continue to stage the event.
