The cases include the famous case against Acting Inspector of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, Donald Rogers who is charged with molesting a minor. He is represented by Lawyer Herbert McKenzie.
Meanwhile, Ovel Mathew, 23, who is accused of beating his girlfriend unconscious in public has been granted legal aid. The High Court Judge who had advised the young man to seek legal aid since the charges are serious, was informed that legal aid was approved during his court appearance on Monday.
However, a lawyer is yet to be assigned to his case and the matter was set for report on December 7th, 2009.
Matthew is charged with attempted murder, causing grievous bodily harm, attempting to choke, two counts of criminal damage and two counts of reckless and negligent act following a public beating in April involving his Guyanese girlfriend.
Matthew had allegedly beaten his girlfriend unconscious on the public road in the Duffs Bottom area and according to Police, said it was a crime of passion. The argument had reportedly stemmed from Matthew accusing her of cheating on him.
The woman had suffered severe injuries and was hospitalized. Matthew had told the Police that he was sorry for what he did and that he loves the complainant.
Another accused that was granted legal aid was Sydney Varlack, popularly known as `Lightening´ who is charged with burglary. In his case also, a lawyer was not assigned and the matter was set for report on December 7th, 2009.
