Students from the British Virgin Islands studying in Hong Kong and Macau under the BVI Asia Abroad Scholarship Programme recently took part in Hong Kong’s Winter Food Festival, held at the Hong Kong Exhibition & Conference Centre from December 25–29, 2025.
The bi-annual festival is a major gastronomic event featuring a wide range of local and international cuisines, where residents and visitors gather to sample foods and discover global brands.
BVI students Travis Thomas, Kimberly Cordez, Zyra Creque and Shamorie Glasgow supported the festival’s lone Caribbean booth, “Kepstar Trading,” which operated under the theme “A Taste of the Caribbean.”
The booth showcased popular Caribbean favourites including jerk chicken, patties, pastelles, sorrel and cocktail drinks, with sponsorship from regional brands Angostura Rum and Blue Mountain Coffee. Kepstar also promoted its selection of Caribbean seasonings, spices, sauces, beverages and other products, giving patrons a flavorful introduction to Caribbean culture. The students welcomed visitors throughout the festival, representing the warmth and hospitality the region is known for.
Director of the BVI Hong Kong Office, Dr. Ricardo Wheatley, attended in support of the students and highlighted the value of cultural engagement while studying abroad. “Having our students participate in rich cultural exchanges such as the Hong Kong Winter Food Festival allows them to be cultural ambassadors for not just the BVI, but the entire Caribbean region,” Wheatley said. “We want them to be as culturally immersed as possible in the local events and culture while studying here in Asia.”
