The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) has warned the public against threatening or intimidating its employees following recent incidents involving workers conducting authorised meter replacements.
In a press release on September 18, the Corporation said employees were threatened with serious physical violence while carrying out their duties.
“The Corporation views threats, intimidation and aggressive behaviour towards its employees with grave concern,” BVIEC stated.
The Corporation urged residents to respect and cooperate with authorised employees and ensure that BVIEC-owned meters and other electrical equipment on their properties are safely and easily accessible.
BVIEC employees routinely travel throughout the Territory to inspect, read, maintain, repair and replace equipment required for the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. In many instances, those duties require access to equipment on private premises.
Customers are being asked to keep the areas surrounding meters clear and safe for employees to approach and work.
BVIEC said unsecured animals, locked or inaccessible areas, overgrown vegetation, stored items, vehicles and other hazards should not prevent or compromise safe access to its equipment.
The Corporation also reminded customers that its By-Laws and Ordinance give authorised employees the right to access properties while carrying out legitimate duties.
Under Section 15 of the BVIEC By-Laws, consumers must provide duly appointed employees or representatives with access to premises between 8 am and 9 pm when necessary, and at all times during an emergency. This includes access to inspect or read meters and for other purposes connected with the supply of electricity.
BVIEC further noted that Section 27 of its Ordinance provides for authorised access at reasonable times in connection with Corporation equipment and infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Section 28 establishes that BVIEC-owned lines, meters, fittings, works and apparatus lawfully installed on a property remain the property of the Corporation.
