Eight Virgin Islanders received scholarships this summer to participate in the Fort Worth Zoo’s annual conservation field expedition focused on protecting the critically endangered Anegada Rock Iguana.
The scholarship recipients included four students of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) and four early-career professionals.
HLSCC said its Centre for Applied Marine Studies (CAMS) supported the initiative by helping to expand access to the programme for local participants.
The expedition provides hands-on experience in wildlife conservation, field research and species recovery. It also allows Virgin Islanders to contribute their knowledge, perspectives and lived experiences to conservation efforts in the Territory.
The scholarships form part of a collaboration involving HLSCC, the National Parks Trust of the Virgin Islands and the Fort Worth Zoo.
For more than two decades, the National Parks Trust and the Fort Worth Zoo have worked together to protect the Anegada Rock Iguana, one of the Virgin Islands’ most remarkable native species.
HLSCC thanked the National Parks Trust for its continued leadership and commitment to protecting the critically endangered species. The College also thanked the Fort Worth Zoo for its technical expertise and financial support for the scholarships.
According to HLSCC, the collaboration is helping to develop the next generation of conservation leaders while ensuring that Virgin Islanders play an active role in protecting the Territory’s natural heritage.
