Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. Natalio Wheatley has assured residents that relief from the Territory’s persistent water crisis is coming, insisting that the Government is working as quickly as possible to repair the deteriorating infrastructure.
“We’re hopeful that very soon we will start to see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Dr. Wheatley said during a press conference on Friday, July 24.
He acknowledged the hardship faced by residents struggling to access water and said the Government takes its responsibility to provide a reliable supply of potable water “extremely seriously”.
Dr. Wheatley said water was declared a critical national priority to accelerate procurement and avoid lengthy open tendering processes, while still ensuring value for money.
According to the Premier, investments are being made to install HDPE pipes, repair reservoirs and distribution lines, and place new pipes beneath roads where rehabilitation works are underway.
He said water projects were also prioritised under the Government’s $100 million loan facility from CIBC FirstCaribbean Bank (Cayman) Limited. $8M was allocated from the loan to address the water situation.
“We’re trying to go as quickly as we can,” Dr. Wheatley stated. “We try our very best to do everything as quickly as possible.”
He added that the Government will continue pushing to rectify water supply problems across the Territory.
The Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government have faced heavy criticism over the prolonged water crisis, with residents across the Territory continuing to endure an unreliable supply and extended interruptions.
