The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) has strengthened its investment in patient care by equipping senior nursing staff with leadership skills aimed at improving healthcare delivery across the Territory.

Nurse Managers, Nursing Supervisors and Charge Nurses recently completed a three-day Leadership Development Workshop designed to strengthen leadership, improve quality of care and enhance operational performance.

Held from June 22 to 24, the workshop was delivered in partnership with Healthcare Transformation Solutions (HTS), a clinician-led healthcare consulting firm specialising in leadership development and healthcare transformation.

According to the BVIHSA, participants received practical training on identifying operational challenges, implementing evidence-based solutions, improving team engagement and leading quality improvement initiatives within their clinical areas.

Director of Nursing Services, Pearla Sylvester-Thomas, said effective leadership is fundamental to quality patient care.

“Quality patient care begins with strong leadership. By equipping our Nurse Managers and Charge Nurses with the skills and tools to lead improvement initiatives, we are strengthening our ability to deliver safe, efficient, and patient-centred care across the organisation,” she said.

Chief Nursing Officer in the Ministry of Health and Social Development, Jacinth Hannibal, described the initiative as an important step towards building a stronger healthcare system.

“Developing nursing leadership is critical to building a resilient healthcare system. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to continuous improvement and better health outcomes for the people of the Virgin Islands,” Hannibal stated.

Minister for Health and Social Development Vincent Wheatley said investing in healthcare professionals ultimately benefits the wider community.

“Strategic partnerships such as this help position our healthcare system for long-term success. By investing in our healthcare professionals, we are ultimately investing in the quality of care provided to our community,” he said.

As part of the workshop, participants developed unit-based action plans and improvement projects that BVIHSA said will help strengthen patient care, operational effectiveness and staff engagement across the organisation.
