(PLTM) - Tomorrow, Saturday, June 23, National Democratic Party delegates will meet to among other things, select a new leader for the ruling party. However, while wagers are on either Minister for Health, Hon. Ronnie Skelton or Minister for Education and Culture, Hon. Myron Walwyn, another contender might join the race.

Initial reports were that the leadership bid was being contested by three Ministers of Government – the third being Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, Dr. the Hon. Kedrick Pickering. However, it was later announced that Dr. Pickering is not contesting.

Both Hon. Skelton and Hon. Walwyn have publicly stated their interest in the top spot, and even released advertisements highlighting their aptness for the head position. However, current leader, Premier and Minister for Finance, Dr. the Hon. D. Orlando Smith has refrained from endorsing either of the candidates vying for the big role in the internal elections.

In response to a question from the media about who he’s backing as his replacement, the Premier said, “I think that all the persons who are gonna be vying for the leadership, whoever they may be, those mentioned [Hon. Skelton and Hon. Walwyn [are qualified].”

Interestingly, Hon. Smith pointed out that the competition is not closed and that there remains a possibility that someone else can enter the race.

“There may be more (candidates); I am not sure because the nomination will take place from the floor,” the Premier noted.

Nonetheless, the Premier pointed out that all of the candidates are suitable for the position.

“I think they all are qualified and they have been with the party for a long time so they are qualified to lead.”
