(PLTM) - Facebook posts dubbed it the “M&M” victory! This exclamation is the culmination of Saturday night’s most awaited results, as here in the Territory many did not care for the World Cup score of the day, but rather stayed waiting to hear the final scores of the internal election of the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP).

The heated campaign trickled into the public sphere with a climatic point recorded hours before the grand showdown when contender, Minister for Health, Hon. Ronnie Skelton released campaign audio that some alleged seemed pointed at his opponent, Minister for Education, Hon. Myron Walwyn.

Now that the dust has settled, both new party leaders, Hon. Walwyn and Deputy Leader, Hon. Marlon Penn are admitting what they would not have a few moments earlier—that the race was indeed grueling. Nevertheless, both Hon. Walwyn and Hon. Penn expressed that they never lost faith.

When asked if he expected to win the hotly contested leadership position, Hon. Walwyn said, “I worked hard, I trusted the process and if you work hard and you trust the process things work out.”

He also spoke fondly of his contender, saying that he looks forward to serving with the Health Minister.

“We all have to work together. I have an amazing amount of respect for Hon. Skelton…I am ready to work along with him if we are successful at the polls in 2019.”

As it relates to his contender, Hon. Penn said, “I congratulate him [Second District Representative, Hon. Mitch Turnbull] on a well fought campaign. We both mean well for this country. He is somebody that has a lot of promise as well. I look forward to us working together going forward to really build this party and to move this country forward.”

During the bid for the leadership position, there were speculations that the candidates had teamed up, but there was no official confirmation. However, during his media interview after the event, Hon. Penn confirmed to reporters that he and Hon. Walwyn were indeed working together to get elected.

When asked to confirm, Hon. Penn said, “Yes it was [a team effort]. I supported Hon. Walwyn during the process. Like we both said, all of us said whoever came forward we would support and move the party forward.”

Meanwhile, the Convention also approved the exchange of titles and not roles of the President, Vice President, Chairman and Deputy Chairman, which is now in line with international standards. The new designations are as follows: Chairman - Mr. Myron V. Walwyn; Deputy Chairman - Mr. Marlon A. Penn; President - Mr. Troy Christopher; Vice President - Dr. Michael A. Turnbull.
