With lack of fencing and signage caused by the 2017 Hurricanes, the Anegada waste collection site is now vulnerable to animal invasion and improper use. One of the Special Debris Clearance contracts will address the site directly.

(PLTM) - The Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) and the Department of Waste Management (DWM) will expand the debris clearance project to Anegada and Virgin Gorda on Monday, with funding secured from Unite BVI and The Bitter End Yacht Club. This is according to RDA in a press release issued on Thursday, August 16.

RDA stated that the Special Debris Clearance project will begin Monday 20th August and end Wednesday 29th August. The week-long programme will address the clearing of leftover hurricane debris on Anegada and clearing the existing dumpsite and derelict vehicles on Virgin Gorda.

Additional funding will also support the resuscitation of tourist attractions on Tortola. The agency further stated that the second phase of the special debris clearance contract comes weeks after the Tortola and Jost Van Dyke projects commenced, and is the result of funding secured from the two organisations that are committed to the recovery of the Virgin Islands.

Both Unite BVI and The Bitter End Yacht Club contributed $42,000 each for a total of $84,000; money that will help to fund four debris collection contracts to be awarded Friday 17th August. Contractors were invited to bid beginning Friday 10th August. Bids are due on Thursday 16th August. The winning contractor/s will provide the door-to-door collection of bulky waste for disposal on Anegada, the clearing of debris left across the island and reorganisation of the current dumpsite. The door-to-door system of bulky waste collection is optimal for Anegada, based on the number of homes and residents, and the amount of hurricane debris left. Residents on Virgin Gorda will see the clearance of the existing hurricane debris dumpsite as the debris will be placed on a barge and taken away from the Territory. Additionally, approved derelict vehicles will be removed from the temporary dumpsite and available resources will be dedicated to clearing additional cars and debris around the island. The Anegada and Virgin Gorda Special Debris Clearance Project is the second phase of a territory-wide clean up campaign designed by the Department of Waste Management and powered by the RDA. The Anegada and Virgin Gorda phase of the clearance project represents the first RDA-lead project that has attracted private funding.

Donors to the project expressed their confidence in the RDA to deliver a highly visible and effective project.
