(PLTM) - The beloved sport of cricket will make a triumphant return at the national level tomorrow, April 7 when the BVI Cricket Association (BVICA) opens their T20 league at the Greenland Grounds.

Newly installed President of the BVICA, Jajendra Bharat, is leading a cadre of new executive members in rebuilding the sport and in so doing has partnered with NAGICO Insurances to host the league which will be payed in honour of Former Premier of the Virgin Islands Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal.

“I want to thank all the teams and supporters who gave of their Sundays to prepare the Greenland Ground for cricket. We are ready and fans can expect great games. We also would like to thank NAGICO Insurances for coming onboard to sponsor the tournament,” said Bharat.

Managing Director of NAGICO Insurances, Shan Mohamed disclosed that the company through out the Caribbean has been supporting cricket.

“Hurricanes Irma and Maria cost Nagico some $750M and still counting as we still have some pending claims. I am happy to say, with respect to the British Virgin Islands, our estimate is less than $5M in pending claims. I think as a company we have done well and we are now moved from hurricane mode to what we do best, which is involvement in various community projects,” Mohamed stated.

He also described Hon. O’Neal as supportive of cricket over the years and commended the BVICA for the thoughtful gesture to pay the tournament in his honour.

Public Relations Officer of BVICA Mr Daniel Singh noted the association is relieved that Nagico came on board as a major sponsor.

“After elections we were in search of sponsors and as of a week ago none was forthcoming,” Singh stated, while not naming the other companies the Association approached.

Eight teams are registered for the tournament which will get underway with two matches at Greenland with Royal Knights against Riteway from 9:30am. The second game will feature Vincy and Grenada from 1:30pm.

The winning team will take home $2500, 2nd place $1500 and 3rd place $500. Other prizes will include Man of the Match and Play of the Day.
