(PLTM) - In an effort to curb any likelihood of criminal activities that could take place during this weekend, when the Buju Banton Long Walk to Freedom concert is being held on Tortola, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has announced plans to heighten its patrols on the island.

The force said in a statement today, Friday, June 14 that, “There will be many extra RVIPF patrols on duty throughout the entire weekend and covering all the events that are taking place.” However, it asked residents for their support by thinking about crime prevention when it comes to their own situation.

The law enforcement agency said normal patrols will be maintained throughout the Territory, in addition to the additional resources. It therefore asked that residents be patient as the RVIP's response to non-emergency calls may be slower during periods of peak demand during the different events.

Further, the police is urging residents to take the necessary precautions to ensure that their houses, businesses and vehicles are secure.

“If you are planning to be out all night, make sure your property remains secure or ask somebody to look after your home,” the statement added.

Residents are also being urged to be mindful of their surroundings, especially if carrying large sums of money. The force said persons should consider whether they need to bring expensive items and or jewelry into the event that they may be attending.

“Don’t invite a criminal opportunity!" it warned.

Vehicle owners are also being encouraged to remove all valuables and any items that are susceptible to theft from vehicles that are parked throughout Road Town, especially in vulnerable places. The police is also advising that drivers should try as much as possible not to leave their vehicle in an unlit area.
