(PLTM) - With close to seven months since the Pockwood Pond incinerator was badly damaged in a fire, it could be a few more months if not years for the facility to be up and running again.

However, Waste Management Officer at the Department of Waste Management, Neville R. Allen told BVI Platinum News in a recent interview that a new control panel from Consutech Systems LLC is being procured.

“The control panel that was damaged due to the fire, that has been ordered from the US. They don’t have in stock and it had to be made. We should have that in a next couple of months,” he said.

Once the equipment arrives here, Allen said a local contractor will be hired to undertake the rewiring of the panel. Once that is done, then there will be some testing and it would be back online.

However, when asked how long it could take before the equipment arrives, the Waste Management Officer could not say. While the plan is to have the facility in operation by year-end, this is dependent on the manufacturer being able to complete and ship it.

At the moment, the garbage is being stockpiled. This is the process by which the garbage is taken to the dumpsite and buried with top soil. There are however certain risks associated with this type of disposal.

Back in 2004, government procured a new incinerator that took years to install and operate.

The Ministry of Health has recently disclosed that it hired a consulting firm to also assist them in refining the territory’s Waste Management Strategy and are also looking at options for a new landfill site.

Both the Permanent Secretary and Deputy Permanent Secretary could not be reached for a comment.
