(PLTM) - Government is getting ready to launch the ‘Holiday Season Park and Ride’ initiative by the Ministry of Transportation, Works and Utilities which seeks to address traffic congestion.

Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities, Hon. Kye Rymer said the ministry’s pilot initiative will run until Tuesday, Christmas Eve December 24. He said patrons of the service will park their vehicles on the Road Town Festival Grounds and ride by way of electrical carts to multiple points within the Road Town area.

The route will start at the Festival Grounds; and pass along DeCastro Street; onto Norman Fowler Drive; Administration Drive and through to the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park.

The return is along the Ralph T. O’Neal Administration Complex onto Waterfront Drive; Right onto Customs Street; Right onto Main Street to Flemming Street; Left onto Fishlock Road; Right onto Pickering Road; Station Avenue and back to the Festival Grounds.

Hon. Rymer said, “Persons will be able to hop on and ride into the city of Road Town, and be dropped off to do their shopping, banking, dining, or even visit their favorite place in the city for just one dollar. The Park and Ride schedule will be posted in the media and around town.”

Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon, Andrew A. Fahie, stated in his 2020 budget address that striving to ‘Go Green’ and foster sustainable development is part of the overall plan for the Virgin Islands.

The Premier is encouraging commuters to use the service which will reduce congestion in the Road Town area and create a more pedestrian friendly capital, which he said will be more aesthetically pleasing.

The initiative will be launched on December 16.
