(PLTM) - Residents of District 5 are being asked to get down and dirty to clean up their community on Saturday as part of efforts to chart a positive start to the new year.

District Representative, Hon. Kye Rymer said around the territory garbage continues to be a major issueand the Premier’s Office last year took the initiative to undertake a clean up campaign in every district

"During this large scale district clean up taking place this Saturday through District 5, starting at 5am, we want to go around to each area within the district and clean up light trash and debris. The purpose is to have a clean district, build community togetherness and also heighten our sense of pride as we all want to live and play in an environment that is clean and tidy," Hon. Rymer told BVI Platinum News.

According to Hon. Rymer, teams will gather at Long Trench Community Centre, the Watch House at Fahie Hill and the Huntums Ghut Basketball Court and then fan out throughout the District.

He stated that while there is work to be done, on Saturday residents can expect a time filled with district love and camaraderie.

"There will be point persons at each location to get the clean up started. All we ask is for a little of your free time as we work to bring District 5 alive. Therefore I am calling on all residents of the 5th District and students to come out in numbers as it’s time to get down and dirty for your community. We need you - a community effort that affects us all. So, walk with your gloves and tools, we will provide the garbage bags. Let’s all start 2020 on the right path, together," Hon. Rymer stated.

The District 5 clean up campaign is not a new initiative. According to Hon. Rymer, the initiative was launched during my campaign and it has continued. However, it has mainly been his Committee and a few supporters.

"Many hands make light work and we need to join together and not just talk the talk but walk the walk. The district is nothing without all of us and it is our duty to set an example for our community especially our youth," Hon. Rymer shared.

He indicated that that his District Committee will continue to conduct clean ups such as bush cutting in specified areas within the district.
