(PLTM) - The government's campaign to rid the Territory of derelict vehicles continued over the weekend and today.
The clean up exercises took place on the sister islands of Jost Van Dyke (JVD) over the weekend and Virgin Gorda (VG) today, December 7.
"All derelict vehicles must go," said Hon. Carvin Malone, Minister for Health and Social Development.
He continued, "Today the BVI Government is paying you to move your old iron but when this operation is completed there will be a cost imposed to all vehicle owners for the imminent dispose of their vehicles."
The Health Minister urged, "Let's work together for a clean looking and a fresh feeling throughout the British Virgin Islands."
At a recent press conference, Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration Hon. Vincent Wheatley disclosed that while it is necessary, there are no funds available to remove the remaining derelict boats still an eyesore across the territory following the 2017 hurricanes.
“The boats have to go but it is not a cheap venture. It is costing several million dollars and at this point in time, to avoid deficit spending we cannot go into it right now, but it has to be done. We have no funding right now sadly, we have no funding,” he said.
Premier and Minister for Finance Hon. Andrew Fahie who also commented on the issue, said that the project had to be stalled because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
