(PLTM) - Minister for Health and Social Development Hon. Carvin Malone has announced that over 4,000 doses of the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines are slated to arrive in days, now that the cold storage for the Pfizer vaccine is in the British Virgin Islands.

The territory already has storage units for the AstraZeneca vaccine.

“I am pleased to report that the Pfizer refrigeration that we had mentioned before that would be arriving in the territory on the 6th of December has in fact arrived and it is being cleared and transported to the hospital,” he told ZBVI on Monday, December 6.

He continued: “There is another unit which will come either late in December or early in January, in which case, we will have one here on Tortola and one on Virgin Gorda. But we have the refrigeration that is critical to the preservation of the Pfizer vaccine and that will be placed at the Dr. D Orlando Smith Hospital in the first instance.”

Vaccines Coming

Now that the territory has the necessary refrigeration capabilities, the minister informed that the vaccines will arrive soon.

“We expect on the 13th of December which is next week Monday that we would in fact have the arrival, save for any delays of the 4,040 doses thereabout of Pfizer and additional doses of the AstraZeneca.”

He said there are persons who would prefer to have their booster shots from the AstraZeneca vaccine as opposed to having it mixed with another brand like Pfizer.

However, “The Pfizer will be available as soon as it is received, properly settled, distributed and we will make an announcement during the week as to exactly how it will be distributed. I know for certain all of the senior adults would have preference and all of the children 17 to 12 they would have preference and we would have a steady flow of Pfizer from the UK so no one need to worry, we will be able to supply all of the vaccines required.”

More information on the distribution will be forthcoming, he further said.
