(PLTM) - An elderly man will be spending one year in prison for stealing three cases of water from Bobby’s Supermarket, among other charges.

Yesterday, October 15, Ivan Gouveia Turnbull pleaded guilty to stealing the three cases of water from the supermarket. He was also found guilty of assaulting the security personnel and being in possession of an offensive weapon.

He was also sentenced to one year in prison for stealing a shopper’s bags on a separate occasion.

According to information disclosed during the trial, on August 8, security guard Damion Morgan was doing his rounds after closing time when he was signaled by a mute to investigate activities at the side of the establishment.

Upon investigating, he noticed the now convicted man fetching cases of water from the supermarket’s offloading site and placing them into a cart.

When Mr. Morgan attempted to stop the man, Mr. Turnbull pulled out a knife and aggressively attacked the security guard.

Mr. Morgan managed to defend himself with a pallet and disarmed him of the knife. However, his attacker later landed a punch to his face and ran away.

He fell a short distance away and was then subdued by Mr. Morgan, who sustained a laceration to his arm.

The police officer who responded to a call also testified to the defendant being under the influence of alcohol at the time.

It was indicated that Mr. Turnbull sustained several injuries, but was aggressive with the ambulance attendants who attempted to render assistance later.

In mitigation, Me. Turnbull told Magistrate Shawn Innocent that he is struggling with his alcohol addiction.

He was sentenced to one year on each charge; however, the sentences will run concurrently.

After receiving that sentence, he was once again called upon to answer to another charge of theft.

He pleaded guilty to stealing two bags at Bobby’s Supermarket belonging to Florida Baltimore on April 19.

The bags contained two avocados, hair cream, a doll and a comb, among other items; however, he stated that he can only recall taking the avocados—later telling the Magistrate he returned the items.

The Magistrate imposed an additional one-year concurrent sentence, ordering him to undergo alcohol addiction counseling.
