(PLTM) - Works to reinstall the traffic lights that were at the intersection of Administration and Waterfront Drive are feverishly proceeding, and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry responsible for Works, Jeremy Hodge noted that the main aim of the initiative is to make the area safe and thwart bad road practices.

The Permanent Secretary stated during a radio interview that safety is paramount to the initiative and that the improvement will soon be visible.

"We can expect to see improvement to traffic flows in terms of the redesign to help manage some of the traffic congestion at peak hours,” he declared.

In noting that the reinstallation of the lights is timely, the Permanent Secretary mentioned that the other solution of having someone manually directing traffic all day was not practical.

“We can’t have humans out there directing the traffic all day in the sun. We need the assistance of these mechanisms to help to manage those flows and make sure that people have something to go by to ensure smooth safe flows, especially our pedestrians, so they can know when to go, when not to go,” he said.

"As you will notice we have quite a bit of motor vehicles on the roads, we have more access roads and bypass roads in the Road Town area, which will call for some level of order to manage the traffic flows,” Hodge further explained.

The Permanent Secretary also noted that the traffic lights will be complimented by cameras that will be monitoring the area to ensure pedestrian and motorist safety.

"We will have the assistance of some cameras that would be monitoring the traffic to aid the police. As you notice, the police have recruited quite a number of new recruits who will also be on the lookout for these ill practices moving forward,” Hodge explained.
