5th Person Tests Positive For COVID-19 Hospitalised

(PLTM) - The Virgin Islands has recorded a fifth case of the coronavirus COVID-19, according to Health Minister, Hon. Carvin Malone.

Providing a situation update on the virus via Facebook this evening, April 19, the Minister disclosed that the newest case is connected to the 52-year-old patient who died at the Dr. D. Orlando Smith yesterday, April 18 while receiving treatment for COVID-19.

The firth person is currently isolated at the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital.

He said that this is the lone active case in the Territory as the three persons who first tested positive have recovered as confirmed by the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA).

According to Hon. Malone, of the 22 samples recently submitted to CARPHA 20 results were negative and two samples were positive for the virus that causes COVID-19.

"This brings the total number of positive cases recorded to date to five with three recoveries, one death, and one confirmed active case. One hundred Eighty-one persons are currently in quarantine and the active case in currently isolated in the Dr. D. Orlando Smith hospital," Hon. Malone stated.

He added, "Our collective prayers go out the husband, the niece, the family and friends of our fallen sister. COVID-19 is real. Increasingly, too many of us our losing family, relatives, friends and acquaintances."

Hon. Malone explained that the health surveillance teams continue to conduct screening and monitoring in order to detect any active cases of the disease that may not have been detected to date and anyone experiencing a fever with cough or difficulty breathing is encouraged again to call the Medical Hotline at 852-7650.
