(PLTM) - BVI resident Matthew Hazel was among five men arrested in a drug operation by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in St. Thomas, USVI last week, local law enforcement sources confirmed with BVI Platinum News.
According to media outlets in the USVI, United States Attorney Gretchen C.F. Shappert stated that charges have been filed against five men for conspiracy to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine. Matthew Hazel, Jose Solano, Andrew Wilson, Cesar Thomas, and Lodwin Aahton were arrested on Thursday, October 14 and made their initial appearances in federal court on Friday October 15.
In May 2017, Hazel, a native of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and a Belonger, was sentenced to nine years in prison in the BVI court, for the attempted murder of an off-duty police officer and an attempted armed robbery outside CIBC First Caribbean Bank.
Since the offenses arose from the same incident, the sentences were to run concurrently. Also, the time from February 2015 when he was placed on remand was taken into account.
