(PLTM) - Sports Minister Hon. Dr. Natalio 'Sowande' Wheatley plans on changing the name of the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex, located in Road Town Tortola.

He also revealed other plans for the Recreational Trust, the body that manages the complex.

His remarks were made during a contract signing ceremony on Thursday, December 9.

Name Change

“I’ve spent many days and nights in this multi-sports complex and I have to say to you very soon I would like to see if we can get this complex renamed and I will put a committee in place to make sure that happens.”

He continued: “Because at this point, Government loves to recognize those persons who have contributed in various areas of development and it will be no different with this complex. So look forward to that coming in the future.”

In the meantime, the Minister also revealed that the government will be pumping more funds into the Recreational Trust.

“I have to give kudos to Mrs. Dawn Crabbe Herbert as chair of the board and the Recreation Trust Board for investing so much time and energy into getting the Recreational Trust to be a functioning unit. Because for many years it was neglected and in a state of almost disrepair as a structure, as an organization.”

He added: “And Mrs. Crabbe Herbert has done quite a lot to getting it on the right track so much so that we wanna see an increased subvention in 2022 after many, many years of begging and pleading for more resources.”

He did not say how much more the subvention would be, however Premier and Minister for Finance Hon. Andrew Fahie speaking at the same function, said, “We have placed $1 million in the budget for the Recreation Trust to keep our facilities uplifted and modernize it.

The Sports Minister also mentioned that “Very soon you are going to see us coming to the House of Assembly with our Sports Management Council Act.”
