Mistakes Were Made But VIP Is Still Best Hope

(PLTM) - The Virgin Islands Party (VIP) is still the best hope for moving the BVI forward, according to former Speaker Julian Willock.

Willock announced this week that he will no longer be contesting the upcoming general elections.

"The big question I have been asked by supporters, family and friends, when I told many persons over the past couple of days, that I will not be running for office, is; who then should they support," he said in a statement.

Adding, "I am a registered member of the VIP because I believe in their values and if we are honest, 90% of what was done in this country over the last 30 years was done under VIP Governments. While mistakes have been made, I still believe they are the best hope to take us forward."

In May of last year, Willock upon request of Premier Hon. Dr. Natalio Wheatley, resigned as Speaker of the House of Assembly.

He said while it is always easy to criticise the VIP Government and even now, the Unity Government, credit must be given under the leadership of both former Premier Andrew A. Fahie and current Premier Wheatley, for the progress made thus far.

"It is so easy to forget that in 2019 we were still far behind with our recovery plans after being hit with two Category 5 hurricanes and the August 2017 Floods, and it is easy to forget that we faced from 2020-2021-two long years, the worse international COVID-pandemic in a 100 years," he said.

Willock added, "That was the reality my fellow Virgin Islanders. I am tempted to add to these realities the unfortunate events of April 28, 2022 [arrest of Andrew Fahie] and the CoI that came with a recommendation to recolonise the Territory by the suspension of our Constitution. However, as a resilient people we stood up to the challenges."

He stated that there are many ways one can serve the BVI outside of elected office, "and wherever I am, residents can stand assured that I will fight for you with commitment and of course, with enormous passion and grit."

The former Speaker added, "My love for this country is real, it is from the heart, and I will continue to treat everyone with respect and dignity, just as each of us would like to be treated."
