(PLTM) - Former Minister of Health, Hon. Carvin Malone has blamed the current Minister of Health and political rival, Hon. Malon Penn for placing plans for mobile incinerators on all four major islands on the backburner.

Speaking at the launch of the Virgin Islands Party’s (VIP) Third District Candidate, Kevin ‘OJ’ Smith, Hon. Malone indicated that the party would implement measures to improve recycling.

“When the current Minister of Health got into 0ffice the Mobile Equipment was put in the backburner. We need those. We need those so we can stop the spontaneous fires,” Hon. Malone stated.

He stated that solid waste collection, treatment and disposal have reached epic proportions in the Virgin Islands, pointing out that statistics revealed that over 135,000 tons of garbage is collected daily and distributed to primary facilities daily throughout the territory.

“Without the installation of material management facilities and the tertiary treatment equipment on Anegada, Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda, and due to inoperable equipment on Tortola the occasional spontaneous combustion fires i.e landfill fires on Virgin and Tortola are ongoing,” Hon. Malone stated.

He said the aim is to reduce solid waste to 50 tons daily which will result in a manageable way along with the 7Rs programme.

“We have ordered and installed the control panel destroyed by fires in 2018. We have engaged RDA (Recovery and Development Association) and the Wood Group to advise on the specification, purchase and installation of mobile incinerators on all four islands and a permanent material recovery facility and tertiary equipment for Tortola and Virgin Gorda and Tortola,” Hon. Malone stated.
