A magnitude 4.93 earthquake was felt across the Virgin Islands this afternoon, August 1, but no tsunami threat has been issued.
According to the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), the earthquake occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. and had an estimated maximum intensity of III.
Information from the Puerto Rico Seismic Network indicated that the quake's epicentre was located at latitude 18.727 and longitude -64.955, at a depth of 39 kilometres.
It was recorded approximately 42.48 kilometres north of Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, USVI, 49.91 kilometres northwest of Road Town, Tortola, and 127.24 kilometres east-northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The DDM said no Tsunami Warning, Advisory or Watch has been issued for the Virgin Islands following the earthquake.
