Police have seized approximately 50 kilograms of suspected cocaine from a pickup truck with dark-tinted windows in Long Bush, Tortola, charging its sole occupant with drug offences.
According to the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF), officers conducting searches in the area on Thursday, October 15, stopped and searched the vehicle and discovered the suspected drugs.
The occupant, 42-year-old Eduard Ramirez of Jose Hill, was charged with possession of a controlled drug and possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply.
In a release issued on Friday, October 16, police said Ramirez remained in custody pending his appearance at the Magistrate’s Court.
Acting Commissioner Jacqueline Vanterpool linked much of the Territory’s deadly violence to the illicit drug trade and appealed for public assistance.
“Much of the homicides we have seen in the BVI is linked to the illicit drug trade. I am appealing to the community to work with us to reduce the extent to which our Territory is used as a transshipment point for drug trafficking, because doing so together translates directly into a safer, more peaceful community for us all,” she stated.
The RVIPF described the seizure as a significant blow to the illicit drug trade and commended the officers involved for their dedication and commitment.
Anyone with information about criminal activity can contact the RVIPF Intelligence Unit on 368-9593. All information will be treated with the strictest confidence.
