Opposition Leader and Eighth District Representative Marlon Penn has joined the growing list of legislators raising concerns about derelict vehicles and the unsightly condition of sections of the Territory.
During a recent House of Assembly meeting, Penn called for stronger laws and harsher penalties against people who abandon vehicles along roadsides and in communities.
“The aesthetics of the country, it’s becoming a serious problem,” Penn said.
He reported counting 20 derelict vehicles along a stretch of less than one mile between the Stickett and the top of Nottingham Estate in his district.
“Some [were] stripped, some are just abandoned, some are just there on blocks, and on a road that was just newly reconstructed,” he stated.
Penn argued that the current two-week period for tagging vehicles before their removal is too long. He also described the Greenland field as a dumping ground, saying derelict vehicles were “growing like weeds”.
The Opposition Leader called on Minister for Health and Social Development Vincent Wheatley to update the House on the proposed derelict vehicle site and the Government’s plans to remove abandoned vehicles from communities.
“We need stronger penalties. We need to strengthen the law to deal with the perpetrators who continue to just drop their derelict vehicles anywhere around this Territory,” Penn said.
