The People’s Leadership Movement (PLM) today announced respected educator and construction professional Clifton Forbes as its candidate for the Third Electoral District, with Forbes declaring that he is ready to “roll up our sleeves and get things done” if elected.
Forbes will challenge incumbent Third District Representative Julian Fraser, who has held the seat continuously since 1999. Aaron Parillon has also been ratified by the National Democratic Party (NDP) to contest District Three.
General elections are constitutionally due by mid-July 2027.
PLM leader Mark Vanterpool said the former educator brings practical experience to the party’s growing slate of candidates.
“Clifton Forbes brings a wealth of experience in education and construction to his candidacy - exactly the kind of practical, proven expertise we need in someone representing the people of the Third District,” Vanterpool said.
Forbes said his experience preparing young people for employment and working in construction has prepared him to serve the district.
“I have spent my life preparing young people for the world of work and a brighter future. Now I want to bring that same commitment as I seek to represent the people of the Third District and to contribute directly to the development of the wider Virgin Islands,” Forbes said.
“This is about rolling up our sleeves and getting things done, the same way I’ve approached every classroom and every job site.”
According to PLM, Forbes has more than three decades of experience spanning Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and construction. A certified Automotive Technician, he began his career as a TVET educator at BVI High School, now Elmore Stoutt High School, teaching Automotive Technology and Craft, Design and Technology.
He later served as an Assistant Principal at the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies before retiring from the public service.
PLM stated that, Forbes subsequently entered the construction industry as a site supervisor and has advocated for a dedicated vocational campus to expand hands-on training opportunities for young people across the Territory.
Meanwhile, Forbes also pointed to Vanterpool’s record in business and public office as a reason for joining the PLM.
“I am proud to stand with the People’s Leadership Movement and with Mark Vanterpool. I have watched his performance for years, as a businessman who has built and delivered in the private sector, and as a government minister who got real projects done for this country,” Forbes said.
“That is the kind of proven, hands-on leadership I want to be part of, and I believe together we can deliver real results for the people of the Third District and the entire Virgin Islands.”
Vanterpool described Forbes as a “strong addition” to the PLM team, adding that its candidate drive continues and further announcements will be made.
