Governor Daniel Pruce has assented to the Human Rights Commission Act, 2026, following its passage in the House of Assembly in April.
The legislation provides for the establishment of an independent commission to receive and investigate complaints of human rights violations, advise the Attorney General on legislation that may infringe on human rights, and promote human rights education throughout the Territory.
The Act is intended to bring the Virgin Islands in line with established international standards and strengthen protections for residents.
It will come into force on a date appointed by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. Natalio Wheatley through a notice published in the Gazette.
