A mobile CCTV unit has been deployed near HM Prison in Balsam Ghut to monitor suspicious activity and deter attempts to smuggle prohibited items into the facility.
According to a press release, the surveillance unit forms part of a joint security initiative between the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) and His Majesty’s Prison Service.
The unit provides an additional layer of surveillance and is intended to serve as a visible deterrent to unlawful activity in and around the prison.
Commissioner of Police Richard Ullger said securing the prison is an important part of protecting the wider Virgin Islands community.
“This deployment demonstrates the RVIPF’s commitment to working alongside HM Prison Service to deter criminal activity, support the security of the prison and safeguard the public,” Ullger stated.
The initiative builds on existing security measures and continued cooperation between the two agencies to strengthen intelligence sharing and protect prison officers, prisoners and the wider community.
Superintendent of Prisons Jay Kendall warned that contraband entering the prison presents a serious risk.
“This practical and highly visible measure strengthens our collective efforts and sends a clear message that suspicious activity around the prison will be monitored and addressed,” Kendall said.
The public is reminded that introducing, attempting to introduce or assisting with the introduction of prohibited items into HM Prison is a serious offence.
