Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. Natalio Wheatley says he was not consulted before Governor Daniel Pruce’s term was extended, but his priority is securing more authority for elected officials through the constitutional negotiations with the United Kingdom.
“No, I was not consulted on that. That is between Governor Pruce and the FCDO,” Wheatley said when reporters asked whether he or his Government had been consulted.
“Ultimately, what I want is more authority and power for the elected government,” he said. If that is achieved, “it wouldn’t trouble me how long a governor stays”.
The BVI Government is seeking a modernised Constitution that gives elected officials greater authority and strengthens democratic institutions. The second round of negotiations with the UK is under way.
“My main concern is maturing our constitutional relationship and placing more authority in elected government, which is called democracy,” Wheatley said.
Pruce announced earlier this month that his governorship had been extended by one year. He is now expected to remain in the post until January 2028.
