Installation of the new passenger drop-off and pick-up canopy at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island is now 95 percent complete, according to Acting Managing Director of the BVI Airports Authority, Clive Smith.
Smith said the newly developed area is already being used by motorists dropping off and collecting passengers at the airport terminal.
“We are now using the drop-off area for passengers to be able to drop off and traverse to the terminal building,” Smith said.
He reminded motorists that the area is strictly for the immediate collection and discharge of passengers and should not be used for parking.
“This is a drop-off-only zone, so we do not want persons parking. You come, you drop off or pick up, and then you utilise our parking lot,” he explained.
The covered area is intended to provide passengers with a more convenient route to and from the terminal while improving the movement of vehicles at the airport entrance.
The Airports Authority also plans to relocate its pay-on-foot parking machine to make it easier for motorists to pay for parking services before leaving the facility.
The canopy forms part of ongoing efforts to improve the passenger experience and modernise facilities at the Territory’s main airport.
The BVI Airports Authority had previously announced that installation of the canopy was underway and initially targeted completion in early June.
With the project now 95 percent finished, only minor works are expected to remain.
