The National Security Council (NSC) convened a special meeting today, August 7, following recent gun-related incidents in the Territory, including Thursday’s shooting in Carrot Bay during Emancipation Festival activities.
The special meeting was chaired by Acting Governor Dancia Penn, OBE, KC, with Interim Acting Commissioner of Police Richard Ullger briefing the Council on security matters, including the recent violence.
According to a statement issued by the Government Information Service (GIS), the NSC supported Ullger’s decision to ensure a heightened police presence over the weekend and at the remaining Emancipation Festival events.
The move follows the August 6 shooting in the vicinity of the Carrot Bay Cultural Fiesta, where two people were reportedly injured.
The NSC assured the public that the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) will use all available resources and capacity to safeguard the community throughout the Festival season and beyond.
Residents are being urged to remain vigilant, act responsibly, settle disputes peacefully and report suspicious activity to police.
The Council said it will continue working with the RVIPF to apprehend those responsible for criminal activity and bring them to justice.
Persons with information can contact police or use the confidential hotlines at 800-8477 (TIPS), 800-847-8477 or 368-9339.
