More than $20 million in unpaid electricity bills is reportedly owed to the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC), with Minister for Health and Social Development Vincent Wheatley warning that delinquency and electricity theft are costing all consumers.

Wheatley raised the issue in the House of Assembly last week during debate on a Motion allowing BVIEC to increase rates for large commercial consumers.

“A lot of persons aren’t paying their bills,” the Ninth District Representative said. “Persons are consuming electricity but aren’t paying for various reasons.”

While he could not recall the precise figure, Wheatley said he believed BVIEC had “$20-something million” in outstanding fees.

He said pursuing delinquent consumers also comes at a cost, while illegal connections place an additional burden on the electricity system.

“You might say you are saving $140 a month by stealing power, but if you have 100 stealing, then all of a sudden those figures add up,” Wheatley warned.

“If you know someone doing that, encourage them not to do it because we will all pay the price in the end.”

Wheatley also encouraged residents to embrace alternative energy as a means of reducing their dependence on the electricity grid and lowering energy costs.

Who owes BVIEC $20M? Is it BVIHSA? BVIEC cut off people's electricity on the second month, so how can consumers owe so much? He need to let us hear about how he intends to improve BVIHSA.
