The Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change is advising owners of derelict and abandoned vehicles located on Crown Land in Johnson Ghut, Tortola, that they have ten days to voluntarily remove their vehicles.
According to the ministry, more than a dozen derelict and abandoned vehicles have been identified in Johnson Ghut, raising environmental and public health concerns. Owners are being given ten (10) days, as a courtesy from the date of this notice to have them removed.
Permanent Secretary Dr. Ronald Berkeley emphasised the importance of public cooperation in addressing environmental concerns.
Dr. Berkeley stated, “The ministry is also calling on members of the public to play an active role in protecting the environment by reporting abandoned vehicles, illegal dumping and other activities that may negatively impact their communities. If you see something, say something! Public cooperation is essential to identifying problem areas and maintaining clean, safe and healthy communities throughout the Territory.”
The public is reminded that the Crown Lands Management Act, 2024, provides for enforcement measures, including administrative penalties for non-compliance with applicable legal requirements. Vehicle owners are therefore encouraged to take advantage of the courtesy period to remove their property and avoid potential enforcement action.
The public is also reminded that Crown land and other public areas are not authorised sites for the storage or disposal of derelict vehicles, vehicle parts, household waste or other debris.
The ministry remains committed to protecting the environment and maintaining clean and safe public spaces. The removal of these vehicles is intended to reduce potential environmental hazards, discourage pest activity and restore the affected area.
Persons with information regarding abandoned vehicles or who wish to report similar environmental or public health concerns are urged to contact the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change at (284) 468-2147 or via email at menrcc@gov.vg.
The ministry appreciates the cooperation of vehicle owners and the wider community in its ongoing efforts to maintain a clean, safe and environmentally responsible Territory.
